Zoleka Mandela: Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter dies after a prolonged battle with cancer

Zoleka Mandela, the granddaughter of anti-apartheid heroes Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, died on Monday evening after a prolonged battle with cancer. She was 43.

Diagnosed with breast cancer at age of 32, she received treatment and was in remission but the illness later returned.

Last year, she confirmed that she had cancer in her liver and lungs, which then spread to other organs. She was being treated as an outpatient but was admitted to the hospital just over a week ago.

The statement said that recent scans had revealed significant disease progression, including lung fibrosis and several emboli (blood clots).

According to a statement released by the family, Zoleka died after being admitted to hospital on 18 September for ongoing treatment for cancer of the hip, liver, lung, pelvis, brain and spinal cord.
